OURAY<\/h1>\n

Ouray was originally established by miners chasing\u00a0silver\u00a0and\u00a0gold\u00a0in the surrounding mountains.\u00a0 The town at one time boasted more horses and mules than people.\u00a0 Prospectors\u00a0arrived in the area in 1875. In 1877, William Weston and George Barber found the Gertrude and Una gold veins in Imogene Basin, six miles south southwest of Ouray.\u00a0 Thomas Walsh\u00a0acquired the two veins and all the open ground nearby.\u00a0 In 1897 the\u00a0Camp Bird Mine opened.\u00a0 The mine produced almost 200,000 ounces of gold by 1902, when Walsh sold out to Camp Bird, Ltd.\u00a0 By 1916 Camp Bird, Ltd., had produced over one million ounces of gold. ~wikipedia<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

BOX CANYON<\/h3>\n

The economy today is based solely of tourism.\u00a0 Known also as Little Switzerland because of\u00a0its position at the narrow head of a valley, enclosed on three and a half sides by steep mountains.\u00a0 This enclosure is referred to as a box canyon.<\/p>\n

OFF ROAD<\/h3>\n

The one noticeable inhabitant in town is Jeeps.\u00a0 Jeeps everywhere; along with all sorts of ATV\/UTV’s.\u00a0 This is understandable as there are off-road trails surrounding this area.\u00a0 We did not venture out and rent a jeep or go on a tour…on this trip anyway.\u00a0 There are certainly enough videos on youtube to make you think twice about venturing out on the trails.\u00a0 That said, it still looks like a grand adventure to me.\u00a0 \u00a0Some day.\u00a0 The following video provides some insight into the area trails.<\/p>\n
