Ok \u2013 there really wasn\u2019t any Blair Amish (or Witch) Project; it just sounded funny as we where driving around the\u00a0back roads\u00a0looking for Amish and anything else of interest to shoot. \u00a0Cyndie and I set\u00a0aside\u00a0some time to get out of the house and away from the grind for a few hours this last weekend. \u00a0We set out course for Blair, WI to check out the Amish and the Big Sand Rush.<\/p>\n

It is Beautiful country in and around Blair, WI. \u00a0It is well within the driftless region and the hills just rolled on and on. \u00a0Up and down and all around \u2013 from valley to valley we traveled on steep\u00a0hills and sandy roads.<\/p>\n

On this wonderfully balmy afternoon, a number of Amish children were ice skating on frozen ponds or even a puddle in a the pasture. \u00a0Their tidy farms were easy to spot. \u00a0Mostly with a white, blue, green or grey roof. \u00a0Nothing too flashy, as they were simple and very well maintained.<\/p>\n

As our luck would have it and most often does, we stumbled on a few abandoned places along the way. \u00a0We didn\u2019t spend much time exploring as we wanted to explore the Blair area.<\/p>\n

Big Sand is very much in the area, Badger Sand<\/a> to be exact. \u00a0The sand rush has been in full-swing in this area for some time now. \u00a0This Amish community is not unlike the one in Augusta. \u00a0Blair has a\u00a0mammoth\u00a0open-pit sand mining operation right in their back yards as well.<\/p>\n

I spent some time on Badger\u2019s website reading about their environmental health & Safety. \u00a0They talk a great game about reclamation & environmental commitment<\/a>; they even have some examples and they look great too. \u00a0I can\u2019t help but to feel extremely skeptical about it all. \u00a0You can fill in the hole, make some grass grow and plant some trees, but what about the water shed? \u00a0This huge open-pit mine has a lot of wet lands around it as well as a few streams. \u00a0I hope for the sake of all in the area that live there and for those that enjoy its natural resources, that Badger Sand is for real where the environment is concerned. \u00a0Hopefully those streams and wetlands don\u2019t end up like those in Barron County at the hands of Great Northern Sand (GNS) plant in Dovre, WI<\/a>. \u00a0Their website<\/a>\u00a0speaks of their commitment to the environment as well. \u00a0I like their\u00a0community\u00a0involvement\u00a0link<\/a>. \u00a0GNS went out in the community and donated time rather than just cutting a check to the local school like High Crush did in Augusta. \u00a0One is perhaps more tactful and the other more\u00a0blatantly\u00a0obvious, but all of it is an effort to win over the community. \u00a0Sand is a very curious thing.<\/p>\n

The nice day grew short of daylight in a hurry. \u00a0The 40+ degree weather was a wonderful bonus considering the sub-zero\u00a0forecast\u00a0only hours out in front of us. \u00a0The warm sunlight set the valleys aglow and cast some beautiful light. \u00a0As soon as the sun set the temp\u00a0plummeted\u00a020 degrees in about half as many minutes. \u00a0It was warm no more.<\/p>\n
