McClure Pass<\/h1>\n

McClure Pass is located along the boundary between\u00a0Pitkin\u00a0and\u00a0Gunnison\u00a0counties, in a gap at the western side of the\u00a0Elk Mountains\u00a0south of\u00a0Redstone. It separates the headwaters of the\u00a0Crystal River with the headwaters of the\u00a0North Fork Gunnison River. The pass is traversed by\u00a0State Highway 133\u00a0between\u00a0Carbondale\u00a0and\u00a0Paonia.\u00a0 It provides the direct route between the Roaring Fork Valley and the North Fork Valley. The pass is not especially high and is generally open year round.\u00a0 It does close during heavy snowstorms. The approaches are fairly steep on each side, with an 8% grade. The approach is smooth on the south side, as the road overlooks Muddy Creek above\u00a0Paonia State Park. McClure Pass is just south of\u00a0Glenwood Springs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/a>Reaching nearly 8800 feet in elevation, it is a small fry in Rocky Mountain terms.\u00a0 It is one of the steepest paved roads in the state, requiring drivers to climb an 8 percent grade.\u00a0 The pass offers magnificent views of Chair Mountain, Ragged Peak and Ragged Mountain.<\/p>\n
